12/20/2022 - "In the House" at The Grinder House - The Jolly String Quartet
The Jolly String Quartet, Russian-born siblings with an amazing story, mix velvet vocals and fiery fiddling with red-hot mandolin and guitar for a blend of folk, pop, jazz, blues, gospel, and newgrass, featuring songs from Sinatra to Cash. This remarkable group has graced the stages of The Opry House, Carnegie Hall, The Country Music Hall of Fame, and The Ryman Auditorium and have entertained in venues as diverse as Nashville’s Puckett’s Restaurant and the Orleans Casino in Las Vegas. Stunningly skillful musicianship and diversity of style – along with a compelling story of redemption from the darkness of a Russian orphanage – produce a concert experience that is certain to intrigue and entertain. Viktor, Gorsha, Yara, and Kristina Jolly, who make up The Jolly String Quartet, were born in Far East Russia, but they now have deep Southern roots that enrich their music with all-American values of freedom, faith, and family. Russian beginnings, an American upbringing, and the flair of a fiery fiddle make music that is both extraordinary and just plain old hand-clapping fun.
"In the House" at the Grinder House is broadcast live on WFMC Jams every Saturday from 6-8pm central.

This week's menu we feature a singer-songwriter and guitarist from New Jersey, Fousheé! Britanny Fousheé, known professionally as Fousheé came to wide notice when the vocals for her song "Deep End" were used on a hit by rapper Sleepy Hallow in 2020. Fousheé was born and raised in New Jersey. Her Jamaican mother was a drummer for PEP, an all-woman 1980s Jamaican reggae band. Fousheé wrote her first song when she was five. In her younger years she studied voice, media, classical music, background arranging, guitar, and piano and performed with groups she had formed with her childhood friends. She attended Bridgewater-Raritan High School and continued her musical activities into college. She released her debut EP Speak Up in May 2018 Fousheé’s voice sounds like the sentient form of nails scratching against a chalkboard, but it’s so sharp, so memorable, that you absolutely want to hear it again. She’s also a Grammy-nominated songwriter in addition to being a powerful and distinctive singer. Cousin Corey sets up a double play from her on this week's Blue Plate Special. |

This week's menu we feature a straight up Pop Punk band from Providence, Rhode Island, Makeout! MAKEOUT (formerly Trophy Wives) is drummer Scott Eckel, lead guitarist Tyler Young and vocalist Kyle Dee. The group's debut album, The Good Life, was released in 2017. After parting ways with their previous vocalist in 2019, Makeout had to gruelingly search to find the right someone to fit the sound and the overall energy of the band until Kyle Dee came along in 2020. Their song 'Home,' with Kyle on lead was released just as the pandemic shut everything down. The band spent the lockdown writing and recording a new album due out in 2023, tentatively called 'Figure It Out'. The Fall 2022 Figure It Out Tour is Makeout’s first headlining tour with their new vocalist who puts a whole new spin on their music. Cousin Corey caught the guys on tour in Colorado on this week's Blue Plate Special. |
