FousheéThis week's menu  we feature a singer-songwriter and guitarist from New Jersey, Fousheé!  Britanny Fousheé, known professionally as Fousheé came to wide notice when the vocals for her song "Deep End" were used on a hit by rapper Sleepy Hallow in 2020. Fousheé was born and raised in New Jersey. Her Jamaican mother was a drummer for PEP, an all-woman 1980s Jamaican reggae band. Fousheé wrote her first song when she was five. In her younger years she studied voice, media, classical music, background arranging, guitar, and piano and performed with groups she had formed with her childhood friends. She attended Bridgewater-Raritan High School and continued her musical activities into college. She released her debut EP Speak Up in May 2018  Fousheé’s voice sounds like the sentient form of nails scratching against a chalkboard, but it’s so sharp, so memorable, that you absolutely want to hear it again. She’s also a Grammy-nominated songwriter in addition to being a powerful and distinctive singer. Cousin Corey sets up a double play from her on this week's Blue Plate Special.

12/09/2022 - 6pm - "In the House" at The Grinder House - The Smoky Nights

For the past 6 years, The Smoky Nights have filled the music venues of Middle Tennessee with uplifting melodies and harmonies. After moving to Cookeville TN, singer/songwriters Lily and Anthony Nguyen formed an acoustic band inspired by the guitar-driven sounds of Music City. They developed an original style, combining acoustic guitar, mandolin, and violin with melodic pop arrangements to play for a variety of audiences. The husband-wife duo, originally from Wisconsin, wrote the music and lyrics to the band’s studio albums: “Burning Bridges” (2019), and “Waking Up In Wonderland” (2021).

After the release of “Burning Bridges” in July 2019, The Smoky Nights set out to play music for wider audiences across the US. The band has since played in Texas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, and even Mexico. In late 2019, they opened for Grammy-Award winning and RIAA platinum country band Diamond Rio, and they have also supported Cookeville-based artist Jake Hoot, winner of Season 17 of NBC’s The Voice. In 2022 they were the opening act for rock bands Jasmine Cain, and Resurrection - A Journey Tribute.

The Smoky Nights describe their sound as a blend of soul, pop, folk, and R&B music with influences spanning multiple generations and genres. Artists like Fleetwood Mac, Etta James, Santana, Outkast, Fitz & the Tantrums, Leon Bridges, and Beyonce have all uniquely inspired the band’s songwriting. Although their music is atypical for the region, The Smoky Nights have found a loyal following in Tennessee and continue to attract fans through their energetic live performances.

Blue October is best known for it’s shimmering melodies and heart-string pulling lyrics, and boasts one of the most emotionally charged and magnetic front men in music today in Justin Furstenfeld. A lifelong theater student, Justin began studying at the “Fame” high school of Houston, HSPVA, where he met bandmate Ryan Delahoussaye The platinum-certified alternative quartet is Justin Furstenfeld [vocals, guitar, songwriter], Jeremy Furstenfeld [drums], Ryan Delahoussaye [violin, mandolin, piano], and Matt Noveskey [bass]. They consistently evolve with an outlier perspective. For their eleventh studio album and first double-LP, Spinning The Truth Around: Part I & II, Blue October unlocks another creative renaissance In September 2023, Furstenfeld will make his feature film debut in the action movie, Section 8 (in theaters and AMC+), alongside Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Dermot Mulroney, and Ryan Kwanten.
